Unhealthy Habits

Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work. 2 Timothy 2:21

No man is an island. This could never be more true. The collective efforts of  sheltering in place is the ‘work’ of us all to help slow down the spread of this virus. More importantly the global effort of prayer to our gracious and merciful God will bring physical and spiritual healing to the earth. I’m praying for the world to see this miracle.

In my last post, I highlighted a few Healthy Habits rising out of this home assignment. There are some unhealthy ones too. I am writing these posts to document for myself, so that I might not go back to my sinful ways or unhealthy habits. Self-reflection and self-discipline are healthy ways to curb unhealthy habits! Ultimately being engaged with God will have the greatest impact!

Isolation
Although virtual socializing is on the rise, yet it pails to the real thing. All of us are realizing this and research shows isolation and too much screen time can be detrimental to one’s health. God designed us to need and want to be together. He created this connection with Adam and Eve to reflect the connection He wants to have with us. Noah’s entire family was on the boat for 40 days, along with all the animals – two of every kind. On my afternoon runs, I have seen more families out walking together and everyone greeting each other more graciously. If you are struggling by yourself through this time, get in the boat with someone else. Go walk over to a neighbor and give them encouragement! Remember the second greatest commandment is to love your neighbor.

Hoarding
The most ugly, unhealthy habit that has come out in most everyone is hoarding. The stores in my area are still sparse and trying to catch up on stocking shelves. When I go to the market, I try to get a little extra, because I don’t know if it will be there next week. This is the season to see God’s provision more than the provision of my store. This is the time to consider making sacrifices. Consider spring cleaning – purging the clutter from your home and your heart. If you are not struggling financially, look to give or support a local business. God loves a cheerful giver.

Skepticism
The news articles are rampant on the corona virus and politically divisive, especially in the US. There seems to be a sentiment of distrust towards the government and how they are handling the situation. It may be a bit unhealthy for all of us to watch or read the news these days. The financial markets are unstable and the lack of respect for our leaders is at an all time high. It is at these times, that my faith needs to be fed by truth. Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good.” (Titus 3:1) The words God gave me when this all started were, “Feed your Faith not your fears. Trust in Truth. Hope in Him.” God is faithful and will see me through this season and the ones to come. My job is to pray, stay healthy, love my neighbor and exercise patient endurance.
