Portion Control

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. Psalm 16:5

January resolutions may have all but ended for you and now the real drive must begin. Especially as every day looks like another Groundhogs Day, without any changes in our comings and goings. If you live in the Midwest, many things are still closed and snow covers the ground. Last Saturday morning, like many others, the kiddos have their sketchbooks and bibles out for family bible time. This time our family reads from Psalm 16. I get excited because it is about food and the Bible. As you can see my sketching is amateur, but God shows up to teach us what His portion is all about. Portion control is real, but not always about food.

Full on Protein
God’s portion is the steak or protein on the plate. He is the one to guide me through His Word to secure my footsteps and increase my faith. His Word brings clarity to the confusion. Faith drives my decision making and builds my muscles. Ultimately helping me to not be shaken by the world’s events. The temptation for me is to get sidetracked by the “sides of life” and get loaded up on carbs.  These things can also drive me, but leave me empty at the end of the day.

Full on Carbs
At times, I get enticed by the “sides of life” filling myself with carbs instead of meat. It is easy to prioritize the wrong ideals without considering how fulfilling they are to my personal life. It is easy to grab a carb and keep going and wait for the real meat to come later when I have time. I will focus on just making money, then I will be secure and happy. I begin to believe the lies that other things, money, people, or positions can fulfill me. These may fill me up, but not fulfill me with purpose, hope, joy and love. Only God can fill me with His strength, purpose, love and security. “Therefore my heart is glad and my whole being rejoices; my flesh dwells secure.” Psalm 16:9

Main Course
The key is to keep the main course the main thing. Not to get full on the fluff. How do I do this? God’s word. Accountability. Community support. If you are struggling in your resolutions and just looking to get some portion control, I can recommend some good resources. Start in one chapter in the bible or one book and reread it for 30 days. A daily Psalm is a good place to go. The Book of John is a great start. If you want some helpful resources to get into God’s word. Accountability. Community support to keep the main thing the main thing in your life, please email me at mel@freelyfeast.com. He is our main portion now and forever.

Portion Control
