Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21
This Fall has been colorful and eventful with pumpkins, leaves, jackets and jack-o-lanterns. This is definitely my favorite season but there are certain aspects of the season (particularly Halloween) that bother my soul – especially the scary cartoons and the display of tombstones in my neighbor’s front yard. Even the display at my children’s library with a witch’s brew went a little too far for my taste. It is at these times, I try to remember everyone and everything is redeemable…our families, our neighbors and our cultures’ celebration of Halloween. For me, this season is all about food, fun and family.
Food
As the weather starts getting cooler, I heat my home with the warmth of baking. The smells of cinnamon and fresh baked pumpkin bread help me embrace the season. I love everything and anything pumpkin and since my family does not share my enthusiasm, I love passing these baked goods to friends and neighbors. Candy is another redeemable “food” of this season. The idea of giving and receiving is a profitable aspect of the Halloween season. Redeemable.
Fun
As the leaves change colors and fall, it reminds me that God’s design for the world is for growth, change and beauty. His creativity is on full display. It is fun to walk in the crisp air and see the tapestry of colors and uniqueness of each foliage. It is fun going door to door and receiving treats from our neighbors. The first year of Halloween for my youngest daughter, she walked right into our neighbors’ house like she owned the place. Halloween can and may be the only time we get to meet and greet some of my neighbors. Redeemable.
Family
Each season, brings a new holiday to celebrate and build traditions within the family. I love that my kids get excited about the Fall season. They love decorating pumpkins together, raking leaves and talking about when they will dress up and go trick or treating. They get to show their creativity within their costume ideas and design. We also try to trick-n-treat with our neighbor friends. This is a valuable part of our family tradition…building friendships and making lasting memories. Redeemable.
Food. Fun. Family.
Do I see God’s creativity and redemption in my everyday life? What is my favorite family tradition in this Fall season?
I love the uplifting message. You have a way of helping me see the beauty in things, as I sometimes struggle through some of the muck in my life. Yes. Redeemable. Everything under the sun is redeemable through Christ.
