“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” Luke 2:14
These are the words celebrating the birth of a king over 2000 years ago on the night of His birth. He was the Messiah king known as the Prince of Peace. King Jesus came not commanding attention as a prince riding on a horse with an army of men. He came in the night as a baby in a manger with an army of angels declaring to the shepherds – “Peace among with whom those I am pleased.”
I started this blog during politically difficult times in this country. I started at a time when my own soul was struggling to find rest. Then I read these powerful words, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Is. 9:6) Through my meditations and writing, the power of God’s word provides my peace. There are times when the chaos of life can consume me, but when I sit at the feet of Jesus – I find my peace in Him. The purpose of Jesus coming was so that all could find their way to peace. (Luke 1:79).
Defining Peace
Peace as the world defines it means freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility or a time of the cessation of war or violence. The bible provides a Messiah peace which means the way that leads to salvation. The root world for peace is eiro which means to join. God knew that the only way for us to have peace was to be joined with Jesus. The definition of a Christian is a tranquil state of a soul assured.
Peace Within
There are lots of distractions in my home on a daily basis. Life gets hectic and I tend to unravel at times until I join my heart and mind in quiet moments with God and His word. They bring life and peace to my soul. This season of Christmas can seem extra chaotic with all the festive activities and traditions I have grown to love and embrace. My need for peace seems even greater. I want to remain calm, like Mary did amidst all the festivities and visitors coming to greet the newborn king. “She treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19) I want my peace to be within my heart.
Peace Without
Once I experience this peace of salvation in Jesus, it guides my dailyness. I don’t have to determine my day. I know that it is guided by someone greater and wiser than I. He defines my moments and my days. My prayer over my kids before they leave the house is the same blessing Aaron used over the people of Israel. “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26) In this season and every season, I pray you find your peace within and without in the Prince of peace.
