MomSet & Growth

A good woman is hard to find, and worth far more than diamonds. Proverbs 31:10

Thirteen years ago I went from the working world to mom-hood overnight. I didn’t even give myself a transition period or rest before launching into the greatest and longest career of my life. Now that I am transitioning back into working mom life, I realize how valuable it would have been to have more preparation to mom-hood, but no one can totally prepare you for this because it is not a career, but a calling. Only God can prepare and equip us and He does. Mothers are God’s design and a blessing to the world.

Mom is not a label we give ourselves, but a calling from God. Callings require faithfulness. I remember once having a heated discussion with a co-worker who said that she did not think it was fair that women had to stop their careers to have kids or take a back seat to a career. At that time, I said that mom-hood is a career and that my mom made a career of raising six kids to to impact the world. She was faithful where God had planted her. Societies mindset of motherhood needs to change and the value we place on motherhood. At the time, I was not a mom and never thought I would be a stay-at-home mom.

Now after becoming a mom of four, my mindset has shifted, I would share even more with that co-worker, if I had a chance. I would say that mom-hood is a calling not a career. Women were given this blessing from God to bear children and raise them to love and fear God. To be fruitful and multiply the earth. (Genesis 1:28)The blessing of womanhood is to be a mom. To the modern women this may sound old school, but this is God’s design and wisdom. The closer we get to know our designer the better we understand the beauty of His design.

Everyday as a mom, I am are making thousands of choices for my kids and family. I am contributing to the molding and shaping these little ones. I must stay focused and influence well. The only way I can help them grow well is if I am growing well myself. My inspiration for motherhood comes from other women who have walked before me, but mainly from the wisdom found in the Bible. I would encourage moms to review Proverb 31 and find these key principles: faithfulness, fruitfulness and focus. Reflect upon how God has gifted you and grow in those areas. Delight in the work of your hands. He will use you where you are and will prepare you for the next steps. Focus on seeing His faithfulness in growing you.
