Milk to Meat

Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation – if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. 1 Peter 2:2-3

When I think about milk, the first thing I think of are my babies. For practically two years, I have been breastfeeding and/or bottle feeding my twins. They love their bottles and I have been unsuccessful in weaning them off.  It is hard. Life is a bit easier when they have their bottles. Plus, I still think the milk is good for their development and growth.

Maybe that is what Peter was trying to teach the new believers.  There is nothing like the purity of an infant at his mother’s breast drinking from the source. Just like them, I need to long to go to God for my nourishment.  I also need to grow from this spiritual milk into solid food. For that is where the true meat of the matter lies.

Isaiah challenges us, “To whom will he teach knowledge and to whom will he explain the message? Those who are weaned from the milk, those taken from the breast?”(Is. 28:9) I need to be weaned into more solid food. To crave and desire this teaching in righteousness. To not become apathetic to live on just milk. To not coast in life being bottle-fed by others.

“For everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.” (Heb. 5:12)  For just like I want to wean my babies from the bottle, Paul encourages the church to do likewise. He wants us to grow up and be a skilled workers in righteousness. This takes discipline in going to the source for my own spiritual development. To grow myself and to grow others.

Milk to Meat
Pure Milk. Spiritual. Comfortable. Development. Weaning. True Meat

What is my ‘milk’ that I need to be weaned from?
