Let your roots grow down into him and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow stronger in the truth you were taught and will overflow with thankfulness. Col. 2:7

Many of us are finding the time to make our own bread and pizza dough. As I shelter-in-place, I have come to appreciate the simple sourdough starter from my grandmother. A starter is how I can cultivate the wild yeast in a form that can be used for baking. You can start your own Sourdough Starter or get it from a friend. It takes a couple of days to start a sourdough starter, but all of us have time now to do this. Sourdough can sit on the counter with a tight plastic cover or lid. Each night you feed it flour and water to make it grow. Warning: It has a unique smell. Making this sourdough reminds me of my life with Christ.

Growing
This sourdough starter method is like a new believer in Christ. Each day the new believer feeds on God’s word. As they feed they continue to grow. Just like the sourdough continues to grow. It has lots of bubbles. Pretty soon you have a ton of sourdough. As Christians we continue to grow closer to God each and every day as we feed our souls. Our aroma hopefully will inspire others to grow in Christ.

Feeding
Sourdough is something you can keep growing and using. As a Christian feeding myself through the word and sharing recipes in scripture that inspire my growth helps sustain me. As Christians, we all go through trials, temptations and sometimes let our relationship with Jesus Christ go on the back burner and forget to feed our walk with Jesus. Just like my starter needs fed, my soul needs nourishment to grow.

Sharing
The sourdough can be in the fridge for a week without being fed. You have to feed it once a week. Remember to give the sourdough starter the nutrients it needs to keep growing. Let this be a reminder for all of us that we need to be digging into God’s word daily to continue to grow. The result of a good starter is its ability to produce amazing baked goods that can be shared with others. We also can share our talents to serve the Lord and further His kingdom. In the Book of Acts 1, the Bible says we are called to witness. I can share the gospel with the people around me. I can give a cup of “mature sourdough starter” to them. Go bake some bread or pizza dough!
