When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. Genesis 3:6
Recently a new supermarket opened in my neighborhood. The allure to go and check things out was so enticing, especially with some free coupons in my pocket. Several others had the same idea and the new store was packed with people poking around – tasting all the free delicacies. This store will definitely be a great allure with its fancy counters and offerings that set it apart from its competitors.
This verse in Genesis makes me ponder exactly what allured Eve to eat the fruit from the tree that fatal day. What made it stand out to her among the other trees bearing fruit? Was the tree that significant that she could not resist the temptation? Or was it her distance away from God and lack of intimacy with him that caused her to look elsewhere.
Food is a necessary evil at times. For myself, it can become a means to an end or a temptation for gluttony and regret. In the American culture, there is a desire to overindulge or supersize one’s meal. This temptation leads to more gluttony and can lead to physical problems. A pastor once shared with me regarding his own temptations with lust…”I don’t settle for hamburgers when I have prime rib at home.”
Food can be a good source of sustenance but when one goes too far in their temptations – food can go terribly bad. Eve experienced this along with her husband that fatal day. As a result, all are born into sin.
The allure and temptation to desire more, eat more, and sin more is apparent in every culture. God has provided a way to freedom from the gluttony of sin. He has provided the Bread of Life from which I only need to come, taste and see to ultimately be satisfied. He has given me His manuscript to understand the Source and the satisfaction for my soul.
Food Goes Bad
Allure. Temptation. Desire. Eat. Regret.
How can I resist temptations in my own life before my food goes bad?
