Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” John 21:20
Breakfast sets the tone for the day.
I once had a roommate who would make bacon and eggs almost every morning. When a vegetarian friend of mine was visiting, she was unpleasantly awakened by the aroma of bacon. I probably should have prepped her for what was going to be on the menu that morning.
Would I care what is on the menu if I could eat breakfast with Jesus? Fish and bread over a charcoal fire. The smell may be strong, and not my preferred choice, but the fellowship was the real catch of the day. Jesus communing with his disciples. Jesus wanting one last meal with them.
Eating with others is a communal experience. Jesus understood this and frequently dined with others and fed many crowds throughout his ministry. At this breakfast, Jesus showed his love and humanity to his disciples. Some scholars believe it was to purposely reveal that his resurrected body was real and not just a spirit.
Fish and bread were common meal choices in that day and culture. For Jesus, they were intentional choices.
Both are provided by God to sustain.
Fish is from water and bread from land.
One is protein and the other grain.
Both life-giving, water and seed.
Jesus loves to reveal himself as the source – the Living Water and the Bread of Life. Fish and bread for breakfast is the perfect meal.
Fish for Breakfast
First Meal. First Source. First Fellowship
Do I focus more on the source or the sustenance of my meal?
Where am I getting the most satisfaction?
